When the Dutch East India Company (VOC) left Taiwan in 1662, 38 years of Dutch Colonization forever changed the island and its people. Four hundred years later, Taiwanese people still have mixed emotions when it comes to the identity of Taiwan. Yes, the Dutch are long gone, but where are the Taiwanese going?
Embark on a journey of migration, decolonization, and identity with TAIWANfest as we sail through the Era of Exploration and ask, what does our self-portrait look like?
Through a series of Hope Talks ranging from topics such as the Dutch trade in the 16th century to the feminist connection to female ghosts, the real face of Taiwan is revealed. Discover the sounds of Splendid Formosa by the National Chinese Orchestra of Taiwan, sharing the beautiful sound of the island nation through traditional Chinese instruments. Listen to how No One is an Outsider with Indigenous DJ Dungi Sapor as she combines the traditional cultural melodies of her tribe with contemporary electronic bass. Enjoy two nights of TAIWANfest’s first DJ Party as DJ Dungi Sapor collaborates with local Indigenous DJ GDubzMusic. Witness the many perspectives and identities in Self Portraits Gallery by artists of all walks of life. See on stage performances by artists representing the diverse communities in Vancouver, such as Hong Kong musician and new immigrant handwash, breathtaking and worldly Kamui sword masters, and a comedy show of local talent.
