A doubly important month at Totest Aleng
June is both Pride Month and Indigenous History Month. At each of our Saturday open houses throughout the month, we will highlight different stories of Two-Spirited peoples within the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Come to connect, learn, and complete the Pride Grows Here scavenger hunt.
What is Two-Spirit?
In pre-colonial societies, individuals with cross-gender identity were revered in many Indigenous cultures. With both masculine and feminine traits, Two-Spirit people were thought to be blessed with the ability to move between gender roles. They were respected leaders, visionaries and healers who were given important spiritual responsibilities.
With European colonization and the onset of church-run residential schools in the late 19th century, Two-Spirit individuals became stigmatized as these institutions forced binary gender roles onto Indigenous children.
The term Two Spirit was created in 1990 as a new and positive expression of traditional non-conforming gender roles for Indigenous communities. Learn more through highlighted stories and resources at each open house in June.
